The Front page module allows you to create a fully customizable front page (Splash screen) to your site, in addition to a lot more features

The Front page module give Site Developers and Administrators many features including:

The ability to setup a customized front page, with its own HTML and even custom php code
The ability to redirect users to a certain page on the site to act as the front page
The ability to have different front pages for anonymous and authenticated users
A customizable site mission for returning users who have not visited the site for a while

Download the module from http://drupal.org/project/front
Copy the module directory to your sites/all/modules folder
Enable the module at yourdomain.com/admin/build/modules
Set the proper permissions for anonymous and authenticated users so that they can view your front page
Navigate to yourdomain.com/admin/settings/front to configure the Front page module
You can configure the front page for anonymous users and set a custom message, full html page or php content
You can configure a separate front page for authenticated users with the same options you have for anonymous users
You can even setup a custom front page when the site is temporarily offline
You can customize your site mission for returning users who have been away for a certain configurable period
You can setup a customized home redirect, whenever users click to go to the home page they are redirected to a certain page
In order for your settings to be effective you need to set the default front page to be handled by the Front page module by setting the link to front_page

As you can see many nice configurable features are available in this module, its a great choice for a customizable simple front page
